Case: EV Charging challenge at Stevens Institute of Technology

Scenario

Stevens Institute of Technology is a private research university in Hoboken, New Jersey. Founded in 1870, it is one of the oldest technological universities in the United States and was the first college in America solely dedicated to mechanical engineering. Stevens Institute of Technology had a plan to electrify their fleet, consisting of 4 electric vehicles in 2020 and decided to accomplish this by using Clipper Creek EV Chargers. But they had only one 40A circuit breaker available for this. This was enough to install only 1 charging station, leaving the rest of electric vehicles out of equation. The facility manager of Stevens Institute of Technology didn’t have a budget to upgrade their electrical infrastructure and was looking for as much affordable solution as possible.

 

Solution

Cyber Switching consulted to install one EV Management Controller between their electrical panel and the EV charging stations to service 4 vehicles and to leverage their existing electrical infrastructure. This design drastically lowered individual fleet vehicle installation costs and electrical conduit within the parking lot. They use the charging stations to charge their fleet overnight and don’t pay any subscription fees. Currently, the building has one EVMC unit with 4 Clipper Creek 32A EV charging stations installed on pedestals. Stevens Institute of Technology is happy with this solution and plans to add twenty more charging stations using 4 EV Management Controllers.
