US Introduces $2.5 Billion Nationwide EV Charging Program

The Biden-Harris Administration has launched a $2.5 billion nationwide EV Charging Program, opening applications for the Department of Transportation’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program. The initiative aims to build 500,000 public EV charging stations and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50-52% by 2030. The first round of funding offers $700 million to cities, counties, local governments, tribes, and others to deploy EV charging and alternative vehicle-fueling infrastructure projects in publicly accessible urban and rural locations, as well as designated Alternative Fuel Corridors. White House Senior Advisor Mitch Landrieu emphasized the partnership with the private sector, while U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg highlighted job creation and modernized infrastructure. U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm stressed the importance of equitable and widespread EV adoption, and Joint Office of Energy and Transportation Executive Director Gabe Klein underscored the need for a diverse charging network.
