Illinois state lawmakers are considering proposed legislation that could require electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to be installed in the garage of new homes. House Bill 2206 and Senate Bill 40 stipulate that a new single-family or small multi-family residence must have at least one EV charging station for each residential unit with dedicated parking. Home Builders Association of Illinois spokesperson, Dean Graven, warns that such a mandate with no funding behind it would lead to increased costs and eliminate potential buyers. Graven added that wiring from the breaker box to the location of the charging point is a more cost-effective solution.
